The Independent Police Complaints Commission has asked Scotland Yard to hand over details of its handling of an assault complaint by Arsema Dawit, who was murdered on Monday.

Arsema Dawit, 15, was stabbed to death near her home in Waterloo, South London, on Monday - five weeks after reporting that someone had threatened to kill her.

Thomas Nugusse, 21, of Ilford, east London, has been charged with her murder, and was remanded in custody by Camberwell Green magistrates until August 21.

Arsema’s mother has since accused the police of failing her daughter.

In a statement read out by her lawyer, Tsehainesh Medhani said:

“I came to this country from Eritrea to live in safety.

“When my daughter was threatened, I went to the police seeking protection. Sadly, this did not happen.

“I have lost a precious, beautiful and much-loved daughter who was kind, generous and loving.

The IPCC will investigate claims made by Arsema’s family, who say they reported an obsessive man attacking her, but were told nothing could be done.
